Ever had a problem that just seems to consume you? Answers are elusive and you just can’t make up your mind about what to do. Oh, how familiar this scene is. I have an interesting stretch for your mind today. It comes from a scene in the movie 7 Years in Tibet:
Dalai Lama- “We have a saying in Tibet: If a problem can be solved there is no use worrying about it. If it can’t be solved, worrying will do no good.”
It’s interesting that so often we allow our thoughts to be consumed with issues that last but a minute in the grand scheme of things. When I was a little girl, I used to get really worked up over moments when I felt as though I had disappointed a friend, my parents or myself. My mother used to sit me down and ask, “did you do your best?” I would inevitably say yes. Then she would say, “honey, you’re probably not even going to remember this in 10 years. Is it worth the frustration and tears now?”
She was usually right. I can’t even remember what one of those catastrophic, tear-wielding times entailed. So, if you can solve a problem, you solve it, right? If you know you can’t solve it, what’s the point is using up your well-earned energy and time trying to come up with a solution. Sometimes we just have to allow life to play itself out. What’s that saying? “Sometimes you’re the windshield, sometimes you’re the bug…” Usually you just don’t know which you’re going to be on any given day.
Fear enters many situations that could have an uncertain outcome. We worry how it will affect us, how it will end, how it will reflect on our lives. Life is about the ride. When you do your best, live with joy and let go of your intended outcomes, life usually serves you on a silver platter. And if it’s handing you garbage, take a look at your definitions of “best, joy and letting go.”
Removing our worries, fears and past experiences and instead enjoy the moments we are consciously (or sometimes unconsciously) creating allows for a perfectly full lifestyle.
Live fully and without worry this week,
